Working with Students from Calderdale College

Over the last 12 months verd de gris arts have been working to support two young teenagers who fled their homeland in the Mazarin Sharif region of Afghanistan to find safety and sanctuary here in the UK.

Their story is remarkable! Leaving their village to escape the Taliban (who had murdered one of the boy’s fathers and had kidnapped the other’s) the boys walked over 5,000 miles … sleeping in forests, scavenging for food to stay alive.

As part of the ‘5000 Miles’ project we are working with BA Art & Design at Calderdale College to create a book … to help other children and young people in local communities understand something of the boy’s experiences and the plight of refugees.

We now have two short-listed arts students from the College, Bethany Hall and Georgia Southwell and the winner of the brief will be chosen at the end of October (receiving a cash prize!).

The book will be launched at the fabulous new Calderdale LibrariesCentral Library in Halifax on 29th November!

This exciting project is funded through Big Lottery Fund and is part of the #CreativeCommunities initiative with Square Chapel Arts Centre
