LET'S EAT!
Every recipe tells a story.
Bringing People Together Around the Table
Food has a remarkable ability to connect people.
Long before we ask where someone comes from or what language they speak, we can share a meal, exchange a recipe or remember someone who cooked for us with love.
In every community, food carries stories. It reminds us of childhood, family celebrations, friendships and places we still call home. It connects generations and cultures in ways that few other things can.
Let's Eat! was created to celebrate those stories.
Working with communities across Calderdale, Verd de Gris Arts invited local people to share recipes that meant something special to them—not because they were complicated or famous, but because they carried memories of people, places and belonging.
Our Approach
The project brought together people from many different backgrounds through creative workshops, conversations and visits to communities across the borough.
Recipes arrived from kitchens stretching from rural Mirpur to Syria, Malaysia, Eastern Europe and the hills and valleys of Calderdale. Alongside the recipes came stories of grandparents, celebrations, migration, friendship and family life.
We also spent time with local butchers, greengrocers, fishmongers, market traders and international food shops, recognising that these independent businesses are more than places to buy ingredients. They are places where conversations happen, communities meet and cultural traditions continue from one generation to the next.
Together these stories became Let's Eat!—a free community cookbook distributed through libraries, children's centres, food banks and community organisations across Calderdale.
Creating Connections
The cookbook became a starting point for much wider conversations.
Participants talked honestly about food poverty, healthy eating, emotional wellbeing and the changing nature of family life. They explored the joy of cooking together, but also the challenges many families face in accessing fresh food or maintaining traditions in busy modern lives.
Perhaps most importantly, people who might never otherwise have met discovered common ground around the table.
Different cultures, faiths and generations found that while recipes varied enormously, the emotions connected to food—love, care, generosity and belonging—were remarkably similar.
The Impact
Let's Eat! celebrated the diversity of Calderdale while reminding us of what we share.
The project brought together communities from across the borough, gave local independent traders an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and produce, and created a resource that continues to encourage healthy eating, conversation and cultural understanding.
More importantly, it challenged the idea that food is simply something we consume.
Food became a way of telling stories, strengthening relationships and helping people understand one another beyond stereotypes or assumptions.
Lasting Legacy
The cookbook continues to be shared throughout Calderdale, but its greatest legacy is the conversations it started.
By celebrating recipes alongside the memories and traditions behind them, the project demonstrated that food is one of our oldest forms of storytelling. It has the power to preserve heritage, strengthen communities and create opportunities for people to listen to one another with curiosity and respect.
For Verd de Gris Arts, Let's Eat! is a reminder that lasting community relationships are often built in the simplest of ways: by sitting together, sharing food and discovering that, despite our different journeys, we have far more in common than we might imagine.
